SIUC
(6-16, 3-10) lost a pair of games to Wichita
State University (16-6, 10-2) and Southwest
Missouri State University (18-5, 11-2) before small crowds
(SMS bussed in ~60% of the attendees in Sunday's contest) in
the SIU arena. In each game, the Salukis played a strong first
half, but lacked both offensive and defensive abilities to remain
competitive. Against the Shockers, SIU's Melaniece Bardley (34)
was responsible for the team's point production, finishing the
game with 21 points. High scorers for the Shockers were Courtney
Sims (22), Keomi Johnson (40), and LaTeesha Hill (23), with 15,
17, and 18 points, respectively. WSU used a 30-8 run to outplay
the Salukis, along with an advantage at the free-throw line (24-31
vs 8-13). The final score was 44-65.
Despite trailing by only 1 point at the half
(24-25), the Salukis were unable to match the offensive weapons
of SMSU (Ann Cavey[52], Tara Mitchem [15]. Jackie Stiles [10]),
who quickly built the lead to 20 points on several occasions.
Cavey scored 10 points, Mitchem added 15 points, while Stiles
led all scorers with 20 points, 7 below her season average. SMS
dominated 38-27 in rebounds. SIU was led by Melaniece Bardley
(34) and Terica Hathaway (22) with 10 and 14 points, respectively.
The final result was a 52-78 home loss to end the weekend.
