Men's Basketball
Creighton University at Southern Illinois University
at Carbondale
2 February 1999
SIUC (12-8) played
a strong first half, faltered in the second half, but managed
to hang on to defeat visiting Creighton
University (14-6) before an averaged sized home crowd. The
Salukis began to build their lead (21-13) at the 9:28 mark and
extended it to as many as 21 points, finally ending the first
half with what seemed like an insurmountable 45-25 advantage.
Three-point shooting by Monte Jenkins and strong rebounding were
largely responsible for the Salukis' success. A reenergized Bluejay
team (along with sloppy Saluki play) appeared in the second half
and began to chip away from the lead. Creighton got within 5 points
midway through the half before SIUC pulled away. A second round
of strong inside play and tough pressure defense by the Bluejays
enabled them to cut the lead to 3 points with 1:37 remaining.
Coach Weber had strong words for Monte Jenkins as a result of
the offensive and defensive lapses. The Salukis went on to outscore
Creighton 10-6, behind key baskets by Able Slaughter, to seal
the win. Monte Jenkins lead the team with 25 points followed by
Ricky Collum with 21 points, including six 3-point baskets. The
result was an 85-78 home victory.
