University of Maryland, Baltimore County at St. Louis University 30 December 2008
Saint Louis University Billikens (8-5) easily handled an American East opponent with a 81-60 win over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers (6-6) at the Chaifetz Arena (reported attendance = 7,820). If their current trend continues (wins at home, losses on the road), SLU will finish with a record of 17-13. The Billikens won behind the efforts of senior guard Tommie Liddell, III (19 pts, 4 rebounds, 6 assists), freshman center Willie Reed (18 pts, 3 blocked shots), freshman forward Brian Conklin (12 pts, 4 rebounds), and senior guard Kevin Lisch (10 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 assists; his points came primarily from free throws at the end of the game as a result of two technical fouls called on the UMBC coach). The Retrievers were led by senior forward Darryl Proctor (29 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 assists), freshman guard Chauncey Gilliam (10 pts, 5 rebounds), and junior forward Matt Spadafora (8 pts, 5 rebounds). Saint Louis shot 53% from the field (29% from 3-pt range) and 68% (27-40) from the charity line. UMBC shot 38% from the field (0% from 3-pt range) and 82% (18-22) from the charity line. The Billikens had 29 rebounds (8O, 21D), 14 assists, 4 steals, 5 blocked shots, and 7 turnovers as compared with 36 rebounds (14O, 22D), 7 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocked shots, and 10 turnovers by the Retrievers.

UMBC senior guard Darryl Proctor (32) led all scorers with a game-high 29 points. Proctor finished with 7 rebounds and 3 assists. SLU senior guard Tommie Liddell, III led his team with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. Here Liddell shoots over UMBC junior forward Justin Fry (30). Billikens coach Rick Majerus appears to be enjoying the efforts of freshman center Willie Reed (33). Reed finished with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. With a little more bulk and attention to staying out of foul trouble, Reed may develop into a big man for Majerus over the next three years.

SLU freshman forward Brian Conklin (14) is another bright spot on this year's team. Conklin has good outside shooting, inside moves, and strong defensive skills. Conklin contributed 12 points and 4 rebounds.
