Billikens (8-5) easily handled an American East opponent with
a 81-60 win over the University
of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers (6-6) at the Chaifetz Arena (reported
attendance = 7,820). If their current trend continues (wins at
home, losses on the road), SLU will finish with a record of 17-13.
The Billikens won behind the efforts of senior guard Tommie Liddell,
III (19 pts, 4 rebounds, 6 assists), freshman center Willie Reed
(18 pts, 3 blocked shots), freshman forward Brian Conklin (12
pts, 4 rebounds), and senior guard Kevin Lisch (10 pts, 4 rebounds,
3 assists; his points came primarily from free throws at the
end of the game as a result of two technical fouls called on
the UMBC coach). The Retrievers were led by senior forward Darryl
Proctor (29 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 assists), freshman guard Chauncey
Gilliam (10 pts, 5 rebounds), and junior forward Matt Spadafora
(8 pts, 5 rebounds). Saint Louis shot 53% from the field (29%
from 3-pt range) and 68% (27-40) from the charity line. UMBC
shot 38% from the field (0% from 3-pt range) and 82% (18-22)
from the charity line. The Billikens had 29 rebounds (8O, 21D),
14 assists, 4 steals, 5 blocked shots, and 7 turnovers as compared
with 36 rebounds (14O, 22D), 7 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocked shots,
and 10 turnovers by the Retrievers. |
