Saint
Louis University Billikens found themselves on the losing
end of a close overtime match (76-74) to Kent
State University Golden Flashes at the Chaifetz
Arena in front of a less than impressive crowd (reported
attendance = 6,434). In their first real test of the new season,
the Billikens were able to stay with the Golden Flashes as compared
with last year's 81-40 overwhelming defeat. SLU trailed 24-20
at halftime and the score was 59-59 at the end of regulation.
The overtime period came down to a battle between Billikens senior
guard Kevin Lisch and Golden Flashes senior guard Al Fisher.
A few freshman mistakes prevented SLU from taking control of
the game and provided KSU with the opportunity to better manage
the ball in the final minute. KSU scored 18 points off of turnovers
while SLU only scored 8 points off of turnovers. SLU senior guard
Kevin Lisch (22 pts, rebounds, 5 assists) led the team in scoring
and was joined by senior guard Tommie Liddell, III (19 pts, 12
rebounds, 4 turnovers), freshman forward Brian Conklin (10 pts,
6 rebounds, 1 assist), senior forward Barry Eberhardt (9 pts,
2 rebounds, 3 turnovers), and freshman guard Kwamain Mitchell
(8 pts, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 turnovers). Saint Louis shot
48% from the field (33% from 3-pt range) and 75% (21-28) from
the charity line. The Golden Flashes were led by senior guard
Al Fisher (35 pts, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals), senior forward
Julian Sullinger (11 pts, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), junior guard
Chris Singletary (11 pts, 3 rebounds, 1 assist), junior forward
Anthony Simpson (8 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots), and junior
center Brandon Parks (2 pts, 10 rebounds). KSU shot 46% from
the field (30% from 3-pt range) and 57% (8-14) from the charity
line. The Billikens had 37 rebounds (10O, 27D), 13 assists, 5
steals, 7 blocked shots, and 18 turnovers as compared with 31
