Billikens (4-1, 0-0) survived a second-half charge from the University of Houston (3-1,
0-0) to claim a slim 81-78 victory at the Scottrade Center (reported
attendance, 7,964). Houston overcame an early 14-0 Billiken lead
and took a 35-32 halftime advantage into the locker room. SLU
then came out shooting to build a 20-point lead at the 7:06 mark
of the second half. Houston would not go away quietly and mounted
another challenge to cut the lead to 2 points but then fell short
at the final buzzer. Sophomore guards Kevin Lisch (27 pts) and
Tommie Liddell (18 pts and 12 rebounds) along with senior center
Ian Vouyoukas (16 pts and 13 rebounds) guided SLU to the victory.
The Billikens shot 49% from the field (43% from 3-pt range) and
53% from the charity line. The Cougars were led by senior guard
Oliver Lafayette (24 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists), junior forward
Sam Anderson (18 pts, 5 rebounds), and junior guards Robert McKiver
(14 pts, 3 assists, 3 turnovers) and Robert Lee (13 pts, 17 rebounds).
UH shot 34% from the field (35% from 3-pt range) and 76% from
the charity line. SLU had 48 rebounds (9O, 39D), 16 assists,
5 steals, 7 blocked shots, and 16 turnovers as compared with
43 rebounds (17O, 28D), 7 assists, 8 steals, 0 blocked shots,
and 8 turnovers by Houston. |
