Billikens (12-9, 6-3) took their first A10 season series against
the Musketeers of Xavier University
(13-6, 4-4) with a 61-47 victory at the Savvis Center (reported
attendance, 9,749). Winning for the third straight time this
season, SLU was able to play their deliberate-paced offense against
the lead scoring team of the A10. The Billikens built a 31-25
halftime lead behind early scoring from junior center Ian Vouyoukas
(7 pts), sophomore guard Luke Meyer (7 pts), and senior guard
Anthony Drejaj (5 pts). For the game, SLU was led by freshman
guard Kevin Lisch (15 pts), Vouyoukas (14 pts), sophomore guard
Luke Meyer (9 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), and freshman guard
Tommie Liddell (8 pts, 4 rebounds). Billiken sophomore guard
Dwayne Polk stepped off the bench to play tough defense against
the taller opponents. The Billikens shot 42% from the field (31%
from 3-pt range) and 71% from the charity line. The Musketeers
were led by senior forward Brian Thornton (11 pts, 4 rebounds),
senior center Will Caudle (9 pts, 6 rebounds), junior forward
Justin Cage (7 pts, 6 rebounds), and junior forward Justin Doellman
(7 pts, 7 rebounds). Xavier shot 35% from the field (8% from
3-pt range) and 73% from the charity line. SLU had 34 rebounds
(8O, 26D), 15 assists, 9 steals, 5 blocked shots, and 11 turnovers
as compared with 37 rebounds (11O, 26D), 7 assists, 4 steals,
6 blocked shots, and 17 turnovers by Xavier. |
