Billikens (9-9, 3-3) lost 54-39 to the Hawks of Saint
Joseph's University (8-8, 3-4) at the Savvis Center (reported
attendance, 8,874). Previous lackluster performances took place
during 1999-2000 (56-38 and 84-41 losses to Marquette and Cincinnati,
respectively), 2001-2002 (55-38 loss to Marquette), and 2004-2005
(67-41 loss to SIUC). There were few bright notes for the Billikens.
SJU built a 34-19 halftime lead and was able to maintain this
advantage through the remainder of the game. Overall, SLU was
led by freshman guard Tommie Liddell (15 pts, 4 rebounds). The
Billikens shot 29% from the field (10% from 3-pt range, with
half of their 42 shot attempts coming from 3-pt range) and 65%
from the charity line. The Hawks were led by senior guard Dwayne
Lee (12 pts, 4 rebounds), sophomore guard Abdulai Jalloh (12
pts, 3 rebounds), and senior forward Chet Stachitas (11 pts).
SJU shot 49% from the field (30% from 3-pt range) and 79% from
the charity line. SLU had 21 rebounds (6O, 15D), 5 assists, 5
steals, 2 blocked shots, and 13 turnovers as compared with 32
rebounds (3O, 29D), 8 assists, 5 steals, 0 blocked shots, and
16 turnovers by Saint Joseph's. |
