SLU Billikens (2-1, 0-0) combined a strong defensive effort and a poor shooting performance by Southern Illinois University - Carbondale Salukis (2-3, 0-0) in their 56-42 victory at the Savvis Center (reported attendance, 8,875). With only one legitimate big man in either line-up, SLU capitalized on 13 first-half points by junior center Ian Vouyoukas. Sloppy play result in only a 23-19 halftime lead. Poor ball handling and shooting by both teams kept the final score at 56-42 in favor of SLU. Overall, SLU was led by Vouyoukas (17 pts, 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots), senior guard Anthony Drejaj (12 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), and freshman guard Kevin Lisch (10 pts, 2 rebounds, 2 assists). The Billikens shot 45% from the field (23% from 3-pt range) and 62% from the charity line. The Salukis were led by junior guard Jamaal Tatum (11 pts, 2 rebounds, 3 assists), sophomore forward Randall Falker (9 pts, 10 rebounds), junior guard Mike Dale (7 pts, 5 rebounds), and sophomore forward Matt Shaw (7 pts, 4 rebounds). SIUC shot 28% from the field (12% from 3-pt range) and 67% from the charity line. SLU had 34 rebounds (6O, 28D), 10 assists, 10 steals, 6 blocked shots, and 15 turnovers as compared with 37 rebounds (14O, 23D), 7 assists, 7 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 17 turnovers by SIUC.

SLU junior center Ian Vouyoulas (15) scored a game-high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Salukis sophomore forward Randall Falker (14) and junior guard Jamaal Tatum (3) can only watch as Vouyoukas dominated the lane. Tatum was kept well below his early season scoring average.

Billikens freshman guard Kevin Lisch (21, Althoff HS) has been impressive during the early season games. Lisch contributed defense and 10 points in the victory.

SIUC sophomore forward Randall Falker (14) was able to score 9 points and grab 10 rebounds in the loss.
