(12-9, 5-5) rallied to defeat the University
of North Carolina-Charlotte (15-6, 7-3) 46-45 at the Savvis
Center (reported attendance, 9,166). In what may be characterized
as a poor shooting game with many turnovers, the Billikens were
able to use defense to keep the score close, trailing 23-20 at
halftime. Freshman center Ian Vouyoukas played for junior center
Tom Frericks who has been nursing a groin injury since December
31. SLU stayed close during the second half but trailed by 6
points with under 2 minutes left in the game. SLU senior forward
Chris Sloan tied the score and hit a free throw to give the Billikens
the lead with 9 seconds remaining in the game. SLU was led by
junior forward Izik Ohanon (12 pts), senior forward Chris Sloan
(10 pts, 9 assists), freshman center Ian Vouyoukas (9 pts, 5
rebounds), and junior guard Reggie Bryant (9 pts, 4 rebounds).
The Billikens shot only 38% from the field (27% from 3-pt range)
and 60% from the charity line. The 49ers were led by sophomore
forward Curtis Withers (13 pts, 12 rebounds), junior guard Eddie
Basden (10 pts, 7 rebounds), and sophomore guard Mitchell Baldwin
(9 pts). Charlotte shot 35% from the field (22% from 3-pt range)
and 42% from the charity line. SLU had 32 rebounds (4O, 28D),
11 assists, 7 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 12 turnovers as compared
with 41 rebounds (10O, 31D), 10 assists, 9 steals, 2 blocked
shots, and 15 turnovers by Charlotte. |
