SLU
(11-9, 4-5) lost 70-68 to the visiting DePaul
University Blue Demons (14-7, 7-3) at the Savvis Center (reported
attendance, 9,148). Up by as many as 21 points (38-17), the Billikens
coasted to a 39-27 halftime lead on three-point shooting. But
all was not well with the home team even though only 2 turnovers
were committed by the Billikens during the game. Coach Soderberg
appeared to be looking for the correct combination of big men
to battle DePaul under the boards. The second half saw the Billikens
lose that battle and their fourth straight game. DePaul was able
to catch the Billikens and the game came down to free throw shooting
in the final minute of play. SLU was led by senior guard Josh
Fisher (13 pts, 6 assists), sophomore guard Anthony Drejaj (12
pts), junior center Tom Frericks (11 pts, 5 rebounds), and senior
forward Chris Sloan (9 pts). The Billikens shot 46% from the
field (67% from 3-pt range) and 67% from the charity line. The
Blue Demons were led by senior forward Delonte Holland (17 pts),
junior guard Drake Deiner (14 pts, 5 assists), junior forward
Quemont Greer (14 pts, 9 rebounds), freshman guard Sammy Mejia
(11 pts), and senior center Andre Brown (8 pts, 10 rebounds).
DePaul shot 50% from the field (58% from 3-pt range) and 83%
from the charity line. SLU had 18 rebounds (4O, 14D), 19 assists,
5 steals, and only 2 turnovers as compared with 36 rebounds (11O,
25D), 13 assists, 1 steal, and 10 turnovers by DePaul. |
